  1. Advertise as someone who fixes crappy jobs. Build your reputation by word of mouth. I have the same problem in my line of work.
  2. It's a true dilemma. The first thing I would do is get a residential builders license; it gives you credibility. Make up some simple flyers that advertise quality, integrity etc. If you don't have a business card..get some with your license # printed on them and get liability insurance. I've found that "licensed and insured" goes a long way and you can explain to people that that gives them recourse to be sure you will do a quality job. There isn't any way to make these guys you describe go away you just have to sell your abilities and "value" vs. price. Make up a little flyer that tells why you aren't "flybynite" and are professional.
  3. Hi, You should try this survey. It's FREE and legitimate. No credit card is required. You can make up to $150 per hour.Check it out here: http://ourfreestuff.net/z/7062/CD1737
  4. Put together a "Presentation Folder" and take it on all your new calls. The folder should incude: copy of your contractor's license, copies of all your business insurances (protects the homeowners and you) pictures of a few projects you have done (before and after), letters from satisfied customers. Be prepared to let them know you do professional work, support the results with warranties and that you want their job. You may tell them upfront that your prices are fair and enable you to earn a small profit and living for your family. Tell them that they might find someone who will work cheaper but that normally means that individual must cut his costs and purchase less expensive materials, not carry the necessary insurances and offer warranties. Dont be afraid to tell your prospects upfront. Most will appreciate your honesty and integrity and that will get you some business.
