Are companies who I am an Independent Contractor for required to send me a 1099 form?

I have done work with various companies as an Independent contractor. I get paid by the minute for two companies and they take a cut of my profits. Could this be why no 1099 form? I have never received a 1099 from from them like the others and I pay my estimated tax. Is this illegal? Are they required to issue me a 1099? I made more than $600 per year for each company.

  1. If you made more than $400 they should send you a 1099-Misc. But even if they do not, you are still required to claim the main you made with the two companies on your tax return. HR Block -- Tax Adviser I
