Do I need to hire a carpenter/contractor and someone to hook the gas up?

We want to have a gas fireplace installed. When I called the store that sells and installs the fireplace, they said that all the framing and such would have to be done by a carpenter/contractor. They said that the labor fees that they charge are just for bringing the fireplace in, putting it where it needs to go, venting it, and getting it ready to be hooked up. So, does this mean I need to hire a carpenter/contractor AND someone to hook the gas up? Can a carpenter/contractor do the installation for me so I don't have to pay the fireplace store to do it?

  1. No, most contractors can do both. Or you could even hire a plumber. But, a general contractor would be your best bet to kill two birds with one stone.
  2. Contact a licensed/insured mason who specializes in fireplaces to do the framing and the firebox. Get a gas-certified HVAC company or gas-certified plumber to hook up the gas. Call your insurance company, tell them what you're doing and get their input as to having it done correctly so that YOU aren't liable for any problem (fire, explosion, etc.) that might ever happen.
  3. You do have to hire the carpenter. He can box in the rough framework for the fireplace and do the install himself. However the gas hook up is generally left to the gas department. Fire insurance won't cover you if you were not hooked up by correct people.
  4. have the carpenter frame stuff up for the fireplace...and call the gas company to hook up the gas they charge extra for this labor ...............but ....they know what they are doing....which is always good when working with gas
