In NJ, do i need licensed contractors to do work in my house? ?

I was wondering if in NJ i need licensed contractors to rip down a wall, install sheet rock, install outlets, install lighting, install new plumbing, refinish my floor, do my roof, etc. I am planning to do some work in my house not a lot, but i was wondering do the contractors i get need to be licensed? Also what type of work do i need to get permits for? And how do i go about doing this in NJ? Please let me know. Thank you

  1. I am not from NJ but I would be leery of having unlicensed firms doing work. Keep in mind that you will be on the hook for them when it is time to sell your home (ie home inspections). The potential buyer will not be likely to accept any deficiencies. Good luck.
