How do you become a contractor in a military base?

I used to be in the Navy and was onboard the USS Nimitz. As I was always on my feet working. I have noticed numerous people in civilian clothing in the hangar bay sometimes while the ship is still in port. I asked my superior who they were, and all they said was "civilian contractors." What do they actually do? Are there any benefits? How do you become one?

  1. first off you have to KNOW what kind of jobs there are. networking is the BEST way. (if you know someone who is a civie contractor, thats the best way.) Just look for jobs under contractors names. ( Qualis, Jacobs/Sverdrup, etc....) If you don't have qualifications for a civie contractor, it's always best to get a degree from a college. ( they LOVE degrees, engineering, computer, electronics, etc.)
  2. I am a civie government employee who works in the def sector alongside contractors. They might be assessing an upgrade to a legacy item, such as new weapons system, engine etc etc. Or assessing maintainence, or other stuff etc etc Or assessing the current inservice equipment, in order to improve the next generation. General Dynamics is one such company. To become one, I believe you would need a degree in engineering and be an expert in a certain field. There are other contractors also... Mechanics, security guards, cooks, cleaners, etc etc.. it is often cheaper to hire contractors than to use your own military personel. The benefits to being one is pay. $2,000 a day is what the contractors working with me were getting. Pretty sweet considering the working conditions.
  3. Contracts can be basically anything that is needed. If the Navy doesn't have enough cooks they'll hire civilian cooks as contractors. My half-brother's father is an expert mechanic. He got a job as a contractor as a vehicle mechanic in Iraq. The pay was very very very good to compensate for the danger.
  4. great question i wanted to know this also
  5. BAE is a contractor of the military, they are always gone, so if you have a spouse...http://www.baesystems.com/Careers/index.htm
