Can i repair my house with an insurance claim if I'm a licensed contractor?

I'm a licensed contractor and the insurance company sent me a portion of the money to start the work and they will send me the rest once the work is completed by a contractor of my choice. can i do this myself?

  1. You didn't tell us which state you are in. In Missouri you can make the repairs yourself even if you are not a licensed contractor. As long as everything is up to code. If it is major damage that requires electrical repairs you would have to have a licensed electrician sign off on it.
  2. ~~I think it would depend on your insurance company's policies, and what state you live in. If you are licensed, then I think you would be as eligible as anyone you could hire!~~
  3. Absolutely. Be sure to keep a log of the hours you work on your house.
  4. Yes, you can fix it- but expect the ins. co. to deduct "profit" and "overhead" from the total. As the insured, you are not entitled to profit and overhead.
  5. Home insurance covers lots of different things. I'm not familiar with all the fine print of my homeowners policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always a phone call away. Try contacting your agent or a agent in your city. http://www.easyhomeinsuranceguide.com They will be able to assist you.
