  1. Go to your states web site and then to the Secretary of State section. It will list the requirements to become a licensed contractor.
  2. No all states license general contractors - check "state name, contractors license board" to see what is needed. When you request an application your will probably get on a list to receive offers to attend contracting schools that promise you will pass the test if you sign on with them. You will need a good basic background in construction and sound financial knowledge. This isn't just about hammering wood but running a business and managing employees and scheduling and negotiating and bidding.
  3. MANY STATES WILL REQUIRE A BOND FOR GENERAL CONTRACTING WHICH MEANS THAT YOU WOULD BE INVOLVED IN COMMERCIAL CONTRACTING. SOME HOME BUILDING LICENCES DO NOT REQUIRE A BOND. ALL YOU WILL NEED IS TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION TO FIND THE LOCAL REQUIREMENTS. YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE A TEST IN ALMOST ALL CASES.
  4. The primary thing you need is experience. If you are not knowledgeable in this area go to work for another contractor and get the experience.
