- Go to your states web site and then to the Secretary of State section. It will list the requirements to become a licensed contractor.
- No all states license general contractors - check "state name, contractors license board" to see what is needed. When you request an application your will probably get on a list to receive offers to attend contracting schools that promise you will pass the test if you sign on with them. You will need a good basic background in construction and sound financial knowledge. This isn't just about hammering wood but running a business and managing employees and scheduling and negotiating and bidding.
- MANY STATES WILL REQUIRE A BOND FOR GENERAL CONTRACTING WHICH MEANS THAT YOU WOULD BE INVOLVED IN COMMERCIAL CONTRACTING. SOME HOME BUILDING LICENCES DO NOT REQUIRE A BOND. ALL YOU WILL NEED IS TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION TO FIND THE LOCAL REQUIREMENTS. YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE A TEST IN ALMOST ALL CASES.
- The primary thing you need is experience. If you are not knowledgeable in this area go to work for another contractor and get the experience.
