Drywall Contractors Knowledge Base
Drywall contractors, will you answer some questions for me please? I am planning to start work on a spare bedroom. My house is nearly 100 years old and the walls and ceilings are plaster. The ceiling in this room suffered some water damage as did an interior wall. I haven't stripped the wallpaper yet (which is also on the ceilings) so I don't know how bad the damage is. However, there is considerable staining on the paper in those areas so I know they must be bad. I am definitely having a new ceiling put in. My question is, should I remove all the plaster to have new drywall put in or will the contractor I hire just prefer to hang the drywall over the plaster? Will they just patch the cracks in the plaster on the walls or should I have the drywall hung all over? I haven't begun to look for a contractor yet, but figured I could strip wallpaper and tear down the existing walls if need be. But if they are going to lay drywall over top then there is no point in all that right? Thanks for your help!
How do I get drywall paste off of a concrete floor? While putting up drywall, the contractors got a ton of drywall paste on the concrete floor in the basement. How can I get this hardened drywall paste off of my concrete floor? The concrete floor has epoxy painting on it. I'd rather not use tools that will scrape the floor.
Roughly how much will drywall cost for ceiling? I need to find a drywall contractor to install some drywall on the ceiling. The ceiling size is 28 feet wide and 40 feet across or 1,120 sf with a ceiling height of 9 feet. All ceiling joists are 16" oc Assuming 4x8 sheets of drywall are used, how much do you think this is going to cost materials and labor to have it done?
How to pick a drywall/contractor in general? ? Hi, my husband and I are looking to finish our basement. It is already framed and studded. I'm wondering what's the best option to find a contractor? What do I need to look for and what do I need to ask? Insurance? References?
What is the legal definition of a commercial drywall company? The liablility insurance that I have claims that I am more of a remdeling contractor than a drywall company. But yet we installed over 1,000,000 sq. ft. of the product last year. Most commercial contractors do instal both metal suds & drywall at the same time to ensure a rigid & durable wall system.
I am a contractor in Alabama and I am trying to determine a fair labor charge for hanging drywall.? I will be hanging the drywall (and possibly finishing). The customer will purchase materials, so I need only bid on the labor. The house is 35000 sq. ft. I would appreciate any suggestions. I have not been able to find market value for this type of job. Of course, I could call around and get estimates, but today is Saturday and most contractors are not in the office and I need to get the bid in tomorrow.
How do I estimate drywall costs by a contractor? I'm just getting ready to get bids on drywalling a room in my house and I need to know how much to expect. The room is 12x8 and needs all four walls done plus the ceiling. The total square footage of drywall to be done is 472 square feet. I need it hung, taped and textured. How much should I expect the bids to come in at? What's a reasonable cost per square foot for a small drywall job? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
How much would a contractor charge me to drywall? I have my living room and den that will need to be drywall. Does anybody know roughly what types of quotes I should be expcting? Room 1) 16 * 12.7 Room 2) 15* 14 Room 3) 8 *16 The ceilings would also have to be done as well. I would appreciate any help on this. I would hate to rip out all of these rooms and then realize that it will cost an arm and leg to have it put back.
How much should I pay for drywall labor? I'm going to be remodeling part of my house and was wondering how much I should expect to pay for labor to drywall and apply texture to the walls? Any contractors out there that can give me an estimate? Are they payed by the hour, square foot...? I live in Minnesota if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help.

What if I finished my basement without getting permits? I used quality contractors. How can I get insurance? Home already insured, but I added basement without getting permits. It is professionally done by many of the same contractors who built my house originally. If I changed insurance companies now, had them do a wlk through, and my house burns down later. Will the new insurance company ask to see permits and/or original plans to my house in order to decide what they will pay for? Net/Net: What can I do now to make sure my house is insured fully, besides tearing down my basement drywall for inspection?
Access Database for many contractors need to generate reports? I need a report to sort all the contractors into subgroups (drywall, masonry, etc.) and include a total balance for each subgroup and each main group. Example: masonry total=blank. Inside masonry report, abc construction total, def construction total, Acme construction total, etc. Each contractor has multiple entries that must count the total balance. Such that Acme check #1 balance $100, check 200 $100 with total =balance $200
How much do drywall returns cost on windows? My contractor is trying to charge an arm and a leg for drywall returns on the windows of our new home. This is new construction. I've heard from others that $30 per window is a good rate. Anyone know?
Drywall cracks under ceiling fan? What is this a sign of and how do I fix it? I have 3 bedrooms in my split level house. The third room only has a light fixture in the ceiling and I noticed 3 years ago there was a hole there, as if the installer (probably the previous homeowner) just goofed up. Now I notice cracks spreading from the hole. In the master BR, my husband installed the ceiling fan and he used a medallion, but we never noticed any cracks in the drywall where the old fixture was. In the second BR, I had a contractor replace the ceiling fan and I chose not to use a medallion. The contractor and I observed that the ceiling seemed to be one whole piece of drywall, because when the fan came off, the ceiling bowed in the center, and the new fan seemed to hold the ceiling up. There were no cracks in the drywall. Now, three years later, I noticed that the ceiling drywall is cracking under the fan in BR #2. Why is the drywall cracking and how do I fix this? Incidentally, I'm sure my roof is leaking but I don't have water stains or leaks upstairs. My soffits are shot to hell, and water is leaking in my front door jamb and I saw a stream of water in my garage from that same wall. But other than that, no signs in the ceilings upstairs of water leaking. Note to handerande: we bought the fans when we first moved in - 3 yrs ago. I was having no leaks nor cracks anywhere until recently. And the soffits were in good shape 3 yrs ago. Thanks for your answer. Revision to note to handerande: we did not install a fan in the 3rd BR when we saw a hole there 3 yrs ago, and back then, it looked like whomever put the light up there just drilled too big a hole or whatever. But there is no fan there; the fans are in the other two rooms, one of which has a medallion on it so I don't know what's going on underneath.
I recently hired a contractor to insulate, moisture barrier and drywall my basement walls and ceiling. After? he left yesterday, I went downstairs to inspect his work and noticed a gap between two sheets of drywall on the ceiling that measure from 1/4 to 3/8ths in or so. Should I point this out or will it be filled with enough joint compound and tape to prevent any issues from occurring down the line after primer and paint are applied. I honestly didn't check if he is licensed. He was referred to me butu he insisted that he is so confident in his work that I don't have to pay him unless I'm completely satisfied. No contract signed either. My only concern was the gap but if you're saying that filling it will suffice should he apply the three coats and sand properly. I'm ok with it.
How much would it cost to drywall a 1200 square foot home? I'm looking at purchasing a home that is 1200 square feet. It is gutted down to the studs. How much might it cost to do drywall on the home if I did it myself? And what about if I hired a general contractor? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure, any contributions will help. Thanks a lot
How can I tell what kind of drywall was used in my bathroom? I live in a new home about a year old. The wall above my shower unit started crumbling and cracking. The contractor came in and just scraped spackled and repainted. But the paint and spackle are now cracking and peeling again. Is this an issue of using the wrong kind of drywall? How can I tell and what can I do about it?
How much are u supposed to charge for drywall in a basement. ? My boyfriend is a side contractor. He is helping a lady out by installing drywall in her basement. He is installing 28 pecies of drywall. How much should he charge her? He needs to charge the lady for hanging drywall, painting the dry wall, priming the dry wall, use of his tools, and gas all need to be included. He doesn't want to get over on the lady. Imperfections in drywall on walls that have been painted? I hired a contractor to remove wallpaper in a very large room. He did a lousy job and painted over imperfections in the drywall after the wallpaper was removed. This includes pits, scratches, etc. I'm determined to fix the damage myself. I've had it and my house is for sale. What do I use to fill in the imperfections before I repaint?
My husband and I have a small drywall business but now have a large job - How do taxes work? Here's the deal. My husband is a full time carpenter but has been laid off since Sept 2008 but we have a very small drywall business on the side. Since he's been laid off he's been trying to pick up more work. He has been awarded an addition for a house from a General Contractor. I guess my question is we now be employing 3-4 guys can we just 1099 the guys? Any help and suggestions would be helpful. Thanks you
Will a spackled area of drywall hold weight? My contractor had to drill my bathroom mirror in three times to get it straight. However, since he couldn't drill into the same place twice, the mirror is now too high. I was wondering if I removed the mirror again and spackled the holes, if I could drill into them again. Will that hold the weight?
I need some help regarding a drywall contract? I drew up a contract for some drywall work I was going to do for a contractor. I signed it and dated it, then I faxed it to him. He emailed it back with some modifications. I didn't sign anything afterwards. I started the project, but midway was told that I have to use bigger screws or it wouldn't pass inspection. The contract says nothing about using bigger screws than the ones normally used. I had to have the drywallers go back and put them in, killed about a day of work. Also, the contractor wants orange peel on the walls, but the contract says nothing about texturing the walls, only the ceiling. Can I charge extra for these modifications he's making? If so, what if he says no? If no, what can I do?
Creative Solutions for 6' Oval Tub With Edges Extending INTO the drywall? Our fixer-upper house has a nice Kohler tub that is deep and wide and 6' long. The tub sits inside a greenboard-clad frame, its rim resting on a small tub surround. There is no tile on this surround, the walls, or on the sides greenboard cabinet that hides the tub and that the rim rests on. Wanna tile it, but... The 6' tub is in a space that is 5'11.5" inches or so. Because of plumbing in the walls and the location of the studs at both ends of the tub, and because of the location of the toilet, our contractor says the tub cannot fit other than in the condition we found it. Right now, a bit of the oval rim of the tub both at the faucet side and the opposite side pierces through the dry wall. These entries into the drywall are currently caulked. Can we do anything besides cut tile the shape of this tub's rim, affixing it across the places the tub enters the wall and recaulking? We bought porcelain tile 18" rectangles. Are tiny glass tiles a better bet? Or another choice?
Can you cover existing ceilings with new drywall? Have remodeling job inside w/popcorn ceiling? We have vents in the ceiling along with changes in the lighting fixture placements. The drywall contractor recommended just re covering the whole ceiling with new drywall. Does anyone have any experience in having this done to their ceilings? I should have made it clear about the vents, I just had a new heat pump installed with all the vents installed in the flooring, so the vents in the ceiling are no longer needed. I am talking about 500 sq.ft of popcorn ceiling removal. My husband and I have added an addition of 1000 sq.ft upstairs and downstairs and all of my ceilings downstairs are connected even with the new addition. was afraid with the popcorn removal my ceilings would look bad with all of the vents and the return in the ceilings on the first floor.
painting job (drywall etc, contractor etc)? my boyfriend has experience in painting but the problem is he needs a job with benefits (a union job) (he's black) so that is the reason why he says he can't get hired yeah he finds plenty of jobs off the books but he needs benefits... does anyone know of a job or a way to get a job with benefits for him please he' s really good and this is his dream job.....any info would help thanks in advance.
DryWall installation question? Hi, I am having a wall removed in my bathroom and when the contractor put on new sheet rock it appears to be narrower than the existing drywall. When the taping and mudding guy was working on it, the gap is very noticable. The contractor said all he needed to do was fill it in but I'm concerned he used the wrong size sheet rock and just filling it in may cause cracking in the future. Does anyone know if this solution is ok or should i ask him to re do the sheet rock with the right size? We are only talking about maybe three sheets worth..... Thank u in advance.
How can i get funding for my business using my EIN?? I am a metal stud a drywall sub-contractor and I want to expand my business so I can pass over the middle man and become the middle man. It would mean a great increase in income, but my personal credit is lousy and I want to obtain a loan under my EIN. Is this possible??
durarock or hardi backer over green drywall for tiles? My contractor has installed green board in my 2 bathrooms, for the wet areas like next to the tub where i have a shower head , and the shower stall is it ok to lay the hardi backer on top of the green board in order to lay the tile or do i have to strip it back to the studs ?
Question for window/siding/exterior contractors...? Hi! I need my old windows replaced...they are wood, and the wood in the corners of the area between the storm and the interior window is rotten. This has resulted in rotting in some of the studs behind the drywall, as moisture has found its way in there. Would window/siding contractors have the know how and the supplies to replace the rotting wood and the drywall in addition to replacing the windows, or is this more a job for a general contractor? I want to get some estimates, but I don't want to waste my time or any contractors' time. (Don't know if this makes a difference, but I'm in the NW burbs of Chicago.)
Drywall taping and general drywalling questions? Ok here's the deal...some of the tape was coming off the ceiling in my garage...I decided to scrape off all the old popcorn texture...when I did it seemed like it did not adhere in a lot of places because now I have what looks like brand new drywall...ie...the bare paper. Questions.... After I repair the tape joints etc, do I have to prime the ceiling (since the drywall is basically paper) before I spray on texture? The texture compound box makes it sound that way but I just do not believe that...since there was no paint under the stuff I just scraped. UGH!! Please help. This is very urgent. I had someone that was supposed to come do it for me today but they flaked out and never called (bad contractor! lol) so I am stuck doing this myself this weekend...no better time than the present to learn I suppose. Oh one more thing...when I do the joints, do I use a small knife first or large? Happy Holidays! Ok...so I first have to primer the area, then texture, then re prime, and then paint?? Is that what I am understanding from your answers? Last thing I want to do is spray the texture on the whole ceiling and then start priming and have the stuff come off....like the popcorn was doing.
plywood instead of drywall? I have a split level home with a finished basement that I plan to close off in order to make a spare room. Originally wanted to hire a contractor, but the cost of labor was too much for me. Long story short, did it myself. I have the wall framed ready for the drywall and insulation. But started thinking, what's so great about drywall? Can't I just nail plywood on instead? Or particle board? I plan of finishing it off with wood paneling. I guess my question is, should I nail drywall on before the paneling or can I use plywood/ particle board instead?
Can I hang my surround sound speakers without finding a stud? I just had my basement refinished. We had the contractor put new drywall over existing plaster walls. I had him put holes in the wall for the wires and I want the speakers exactly across from each other. They weigh about 6 lbs. each. Can I just put the screws through the drywall and plaster without locating a stud for hanging?
Drywall fisnishing? We had some remodeling done, and on some of the finished drywall seams you can still see the tape the contractor used. Does this require another layer of mudd, or is it Ok to paint?
