Replacement windows botched by a reputable home store! The contractors took out all of the brick molding. ? The contractors sent by this home improvement store didn't know what they were doing. They ordered the wrong size windows. Instead of ordering the proper windows, they ripped out all of the framing and brick molding. Any suggestions how these windows can be put back properly? To make matters worse, some of the windows they put in were damaged. We have plastic over our windows and a wide gap that can possibly lead to water damage. Any suggestions as to what we can do now?
What is the R-value of contractor grade windows? We have original windows put in by the builders in our 15 year-old home. We are not the original owners, so I have no idea what R-value windows were used. We are in central Maryland, if that makes a difference. Does anyone have any idea what the R-value would be? This is not a mansion, but a regular 1800 square foot home.
Do you need a contractors license to start a window company in California? Ok so, my family owns window companies in Illinois. Window replacement, siding, roofs, doors, etc. Basically they have relationships with factories that they buy their products from and have 2 teams of installers who actuallly install the products. I live in southern california and wanted to open a division of the family business here. I have been doing a little research and I am finding that most window company owners have contractors license. Is this required? Is there a way around it if my installers are licensed? Anyone with knowledge in this area would be appreciated thanks! Just to clarify my question: Does the retail portion of sales need a contractors license? OBVIOUSLY the actual installers doing the work would be licensed.

Question for window/siding/exterior contractors...? Hi! I need my old windows replaced...they are wood, and the wood in the corners of the area between the storm and the interior window is rotten. This has resulted in rotting in some of the studs behind the drywall, as moisture has found its way in there. Would window/siding contractors have the know how and the supplies to replace the rotting wood and the drywall in addition to replacing the windows, or is this more a job for a general contractor? I want to get some estimates, but I don't want to waste my time or any contractors' time. (Don't know if this makes a difference, but I'm in the NW burbs of Chicago.)
Construction: Replacing all windows and siding on my house? I am a single woman who lives alone. I will have all the windows and the siding on my house replaced. I will have a few estimates done. Do you have any advice on choosing windows and siding, as well as choosing contractors ? I am afraid to be given the run around because I am a woman.
Do I need building permits to replace my windows? I live in a tract home made in the late 40's early 50's. all of the windows are single pane the wood framings are rotted and they are in need of replacement. Some of the windows are made from floor to ceiling in which case I might have to stucko the remainder of the outside walls when I replace the big ones with the regular sized windows. I am told by friends and some contractors that I don't need a permit to replace the windows since I am not doing any major renovations that effects the floor plan or square footage of my home. Is this true? By the wayI live in Orange County , California.
Why so many No-show Home Improvement contractors? Over the years, I have had several Home improvement contractors show up to take measurements for floors, windows, plumbing, etc, but then they never follow through and send an estimate. Why do you think that is happening? I have money to spend and tried to track themn down for their quote but they gve me the runaround.
What is the average cost of new windows and siding? I own a split-foyer style home, about 1900 sq ft with a two-car garage. It has twelve windows and siding on the top floor. I'd like to install new triple-paned windows and new siding with Tyvek wrap underneath. Companies and independent contractors have given me widely varying estimates for the work. Does anyone have a general idea of the cost? I know materials affect the cost but just assume I'm using mid-range products. Thanks for your help. I plan on buying vinyl windows and vinyl siding. I'm replacing wood-framed single-pane windows and aluminum siding.
To caulk or not to caulk new vinyl windows? We just got new vinyl replacement windows installed. Our contractor, who has done tons of great work for us over the years, told us not to caulk these windows between the window and the extension jam. Is this correct? All of our older windows are caulked, but he said no, let the window expand and contract at will. Opinions?
How do I measure my windows for ordering window tint film? I would like to do it myself. Do I measure linear feet or do I measure square footage? I have 20 windows but the panels are no wider than 32 inches or longer than 29 inches. I have several estimates for the same film but wildly different in terms of price. How do the contractors come up with the true amount of film needed? Thank you in advance
I have wood clad pella windows installed and the roof is not complete yet. Will rain stain the wood? My contractor installed the windows before the roof was complete and now we are up for 24 hours of rain. My pella windows are pine clad and I am concerned that rain will stain the wood and will show up during staining and sealing process. What can I do to make sure this does not happen? Should I contact Pella to make sure that my butt is covered? We have 35 windows, all are wood clad interior/metal clad exterior. I have taken pictures all along the way and so everything is and will be documented in pictures. Here is a link to the pictures that will show the kind and type of pella windows we have installed. http://www.studio57designs.com/gallery/index.php Any help would be appreciated. I dont want have to go thru the process of replacing windows, nor will I accept stained window frames. Thanks for any helpful solutions.
Pre-intallation of new windows in a house.? I hired a contractor to install 30 windows in my house. I was wondering if anyone else had windows installed and could give me some tips on what to expect. (i.e. have security wires inserted before the windows are placed in) Also does anyone have horror stories of windows not being installed correctly? Please let me know. Thank you. I've done all the usual preliminary task of checking licenses and bonds on the contractor that I have chosen. As for the security switch built it, I had no idea that was an option. I am interested in still hearing any horror stories that might come my way, so that I am better prepared.
Replacing doors with windows in a cinderblock house? I live in a cinderblock-and-stucco house in Florida. I have a west-facing sliding glass door in my family room as well as a "pool door" in my bathroom that I want to take out and replace with windows. Do I call a contractor? A mason? How do I go about getting estimates for this kind of work? What should I ask/look for/expect?

How do I remove EIFS (stucco) from aluminum clad windows? A customer of mine recently had some home remodeling done and the EIFS (synthetic stucco, such as Dryvit) contractor splattered the stucco over the aluminum clad window frames and sashes. The windows are Hurd brand with a powder-coat finish. How might that be removed without scratching the window finish?
Does Stucco go on before or after I install windows? I've just finished walling up my former porch, when I'm done it'll be another room in our house. I framed it up with studs and built the rough openings for (4) windows, I already tested a window in the opening I made & it fits perfectly with about a 1/2" extra on all sides. I then screwed on plywood to the outside. Tomorrow I'll cut out the windows & Tyvek it in preparation for having a contractor come and give me a qoute for applying stucco to the outside. So here's my question, do the windows go in before the stucco is applied, or do I wait until the stucco has been applied to install the windows?
What are the best make of Windows for your money? Home depot gave me a qyuote and claimed their best vinyl windows were better than Andersens? I heard differently from a contractor. I would be doing about 15 double hung and 2 bays. Also, is there a good wholesale place to buy these if I wanted to install on my own?
We were told we would need "new construction windows"....? Okay, so we bought a house a couple of months ago and would like to replace the windows before the winter season hits us. We had someone from Lowe's come out and he told us he would not do the windows through Lowe's, that we would need to hire a contractor and get "new construction windows". What is the difference between regular replacements windows and new construction windows? This house was built in 1986 and it still has the original windows. Is there a big price difference between regular replacement windows and new construction windows? How do we go about getting this accomplished? Is this something you recommend or should we call another company in the area and get a second opinion? Thank you for any help! Our house was built in 1986. The front is brick and the sides and back are siding. The windows and wood around would need to be replaced. I never asked about any certain type of window, just that we would like to replace them and he said Lowe's would not do them. He said I would need new construction windows and to call a contractor for that.
How much do drywall returns cost on windows? My contractor is trying to charge an arm and a leg for drywall returns on the windows of our new home. This is new construction. I've heard from others that $30 per window is a good rate. Anyone know?
Got contractors coming inside, need shoes booties or coverings? Got contractors coming inside to install window treatments, I need shoes booties or those plastic sticky carpet covering. I cant find sturdy shoe booties at HD and Lowes. The ones from those hospitals would be ideal. Any ideas on how to best protect the flooring while they are here (they wont take off their shoes)? If its booties, where can I find them? I am located in So Cal. THanks!
Windows with grids vs Windows without? I have four windows in the front of my house, which have grids in them. All my new windows will have grids in them also, my contractor advised me that if we choose to go for the windows without grids they can replace the four at no additional cost. Is there a big difference between the two types of windows?
Can I use a silicone sealer meant for doors and windows in my shower? I had a tile shower installed about two years ago and the caulk between the floor and walls is starting to deteriorate. The contractor used a gray caulk to match the tiles. I cannot find gray caulk meant for showers anywhere. I did find a gray silicone caulk that is waterproof but says it is meant for doors and windows. Can I use this in my shower since it says it is waterproof? I found the original bottle of caulk the contractor used and it says right on the bottle "not meant for showers".
GLASS CONTRACTORS - How much to replace a single pane glass about 2ft x 3ft in a window? I got quotes from several places, lowest bid was $85. It's from a guy who works at a glass company, this is his special price "just for me" since I contacted him directly. He said normally the cost would be $145 if I went through the company. All other bids were over $100, this guy was the lowest at $85. This still seems high to me for a piece of glass + labor. What do you think?
Contractors, please expose the magic numbers. How much does it cost to remodel these items? sliding door to a patio, 6 foot bedroom window, remove a tub and install a walk-in shower with new travestine tiling Every time I try to google it, all I can find are people who want to come out and give me estimates. I want to know a number before I meet these people, so I can tell how inflated their prices are. The Flip That House show hasn't been too helpful because they don't itemize the work they are doing.
Windows replacement problem with contractor? I lived in California. I replaced the windows of my house with new double-pane window last September. I made the purchased through HomeDepot who contracted out the installation to 3rd party contractor. My window installation overall went well. However, there are 3 windows having problem with trim poping up. I noticed the problem the date of the installation. The installer said he will put a note in the acceptance paper and talk to their office and get back to me. They never got back to me and stopped answering call. HomeDepot discontinued the installation relationship with this contractor later (nothing to do with my case). I took the photo of problems and went back to HomeDepot to ask the guy sold me the windows. I was passed to install department. A manager said he needs to order new trim first. Once it arrives, he will give me a call. So far, there is still no one calling me. When I called him, he won't give anything specific. Please advice what should I do to have my problem fixed.
Why do new houses have so few windows? There is a great deal of construction, of brand new homes, in my city. It doesn't matter what contractor is building them, or what part of town they are in, they all have one thing in common: They all have a ridiculously small number of windows. If you look at older homes, I'd say almost every room has at least one window. Two per room seems average for an older home. These new homes, are often lacking a single window, in one, or more, entire exterior wall! It doesn't seem to matter if the house is big or small, they still lack windows. Not only does it look unappealing to the eye outdoors, but how are these homes supposed to get natural light or fresh air inside? I suspect this trend is happening for two possible reasons: energy efficiency and construction cost. In cases where energy efficiency is the *only* factor for having a lack of windows, why not simply build using energy efficient windows? I hate new houses. They are so windowless, they might as well be tombs. Yuck.
How do I measure my windows for ordering window tint film? I would like to do it myself. Do I measure linear feet or do I measure square footage? I have 20 windows but the panels are no wider than 32 inches or longer than 29 inches. I have several estimates for the same film but wildly different in terms of price. This question is for window washers, contractors, or people with awesome common sense? (or of course just extremely creative people i guess) Any experienced window washers, or even just contractors in general? I am opening a window washing business soon and I don't like ladders. I definately don't have the money for a lift thing. So I bought some awesome squeegees that extend that I would like to use on windows that are high up. Now my questions are... how in the world am I going ot be able to tell if they are clean or not? I don't want to miss spots and have the business owner/home owner go upstairs and see it like that. Really the only thing I can think of is asking them if they minded if I went up to make sure it is clean, or asking them if they can do it. But with my previous sales experience, I do know that some people would be nice enough to do so, but there are the a-holes in the bunch who would not want to do that, also there are people who may not be around when I do the jobs. So what do you suggest? How can I make sure the windows are clean up there? ****reply to my first answer...insurance is more expensive if i step foot in the door to do work. so i was going to do outside work only, BUT now that you mention it, that is an AWESOME idea to contact cleaning companies to get refferals, wow. i may change my mind now. thank you. still unsure though.

We plan to renovate the main floor first so that we can move in by Oct 1st and finish the basement and upper floor as we live there. This house needs new roof, new plumbing, new elecric, it is having some walls knocked down and replaced with beams, needs the walls insulated, new walls put up, change windows, it also has no kitchen and no bathrrom. Plus it needs all the lath and plaster knocked out. We can do any of these things ourselves but need to hire out alot of the work to have it done in time. What things should we do and which should we hire out to save the most money? It is 90 yrs old, w 9 yr old basement. It has bathrooms but are in such bad sha[pe have to be completely redone, no plumbing to them either so they are being moved elseware in the home. I dont know where the heck the kitchen was or why there isn't one anymore but there is none. The house was moved onto this new basement 9 yrs ago and left this way since. It will be valuable once done. We have renters for our house for Oct 1st, we need the rent coming in to afford to do this one!
