I need to find an affordable home repair contractor for the Washington, DC area? My home is old and it needs a lot of work. However, I am on a fixed budget, and I need a contractor who can do anything from drywall, painting, yard work and plumbing, etc. To get a contractor to do work in the Washington, DC area is hard, because certain parts of DC has a lot of historical site laws which can place lot of restrictions on home owners and contractors. I need help before my old house becomes a serious problem.
Why do home contractor over-extend themselves accepting new jobs? I had a contractor once that was always putting off doing the work because he "had to go look at another job." This happened about 10 times. Why do they spend so much time looking for other jobs when they should be doing the ones for which they are hired? I finally got fed up and told him to forget it. He responded that I had no idea how the contracting business worked. So, how does it work?
Is it legal for a home improvement contractor to walk off the job? We hired a home improvement contractor for a major landscaping job. He completed about 80% of the work but then disappeared. Right before he disappeared, he asked if we minded paying him for the work he already completed. He seemed nice so we agreed. Then, he vanished, even though he signed a contract with us saying that he was supposed to do our driveway (which he didn't -- and now it is near winter and we have no driveway). Can he legally do this? (walk off a job even though the work in the contract is incomplete)
Where would you look for a home improvement contractor? I am a small business owner who is looking to market my company (vinyl siding installer) And would like everyone's opinion on where they would look for a contractor to do a major home improvement project. Thanks for your responses!!
What NJ government agency if any handles rebates for mistakes made by a home improvement contractor? The contractor I used installed a shower/sauna/jacuzzi all in one unit and now it leaks at almost all junction points and the handle is leaking water as well. In addition, I needed him to repair one of the electrical lines that come into my fuse box from the power company, otherwise I don't have enough power to operate the sauna. The contractor refuses to do any other work at this point.I read somewhere a while ago that there was an agency that gave rebates to consumers who had home improvements done in a less than complete and/or professional manner.

I had repair work done on my home the contractor exposed yellow insulation 5 months in kitchen. Risks? We are dealing with a national pest control company that is notorious for shoddy contractors. I am very concerned about the exposed insulation where walls were left for 5 months, plus the fact the plastic curtain was removed and then they sanded drywall which filtered throughout my home. They have NEVER cleaned. They have agreed to pay for air/duct cleaning now, but I am very concerned about the insulation and exposure in the kitchen. HELP
Questions to ask a prospective home contractor? My husband and I are considering renovating our bathrooms and possibly finishing our basement soon. Right now I'm in the process of lining up contractors to get estimates from but I am unsure of what questions I should ask. I've never had work like this done so that is why I am asking. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Tara
Is a home construction contractor responsible for repairing damage caused by his actions? Say a homeowner hires a contractor to paint some exterior trim on a house. As the contractor works, some of the wood being painted breaks off due to dry rot. the homeowner feels that the contractor should now repair the trim in addition to painting it. The contractor says he should not be held responsible for the condition of the wood he was asked to paint and since repairing was not negotiated in the contract, he is under no obligation to do any carpentry work.

Do I have to allow a contractor back in my home to "fix" terrible work they did? I had cement work done on my home recently and already paid for it. A few weeks later it has many cracks and moves when stepping on it. I don't trust the contractor any longer and I don't want to let him even try to repair it.Can I just file a small claims lawsuit and get my money back and get a different contractor to do the job right.
How to protect myself from a general contractor performing home remodeling? I am about to have a general contractor perform services for me (tile in kitchen, wood flooring, wallpaper removal). He told me that there is no contract to sign, and that we both can sign the proposal he has given me to act as a contract. I trust the guy, as a trustworthy friend of mine recommended him, but what do I need to do to protect myself? Is there a simple contract I can draw up to ask him to sign? Where can I find it? Thank you.
Can a home construction contractor have an LLC? I heard about a home construction contractor who is in quite a bit of personal debt because of not having insurance on a job he had completed which he was later sued on... Could he have had an LLC for this type of business? I'm just wondering if fifty dollars could have protected him from hundreds of thousands of dollars of personal debt...
Where can I connect with a Local Contractor who would be willing to show / help me to do additon to my home? I would like to build a 14' x 22' additon on to my home and I would like to have a licenced local contractor to show me how ( so I can learn ) but also, I can only afford to buy the materials needed. I cannot afford the labor. I would be willing to work and to help ( evenings and weekends ) I want to build this addition for my wife but I cannot afford what some of the local contractors charge. Any suggestions ? I am not afraid of hard work ( I currently work two jobs ), but I am trying to see if I can find a honest - possibly retired - contractor who has experience building homes / renovations. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. I live in Shamokin Dam, PA poohandhunnypot@verizon.net

Are you a home contractor? Have you ever agreed to do some work that you really couldn't do? But you figured, it couldnt be that hard...or you thought you would be able to find someone to work alongside you who knew what to do? When or if you realised it was "over your head" did you decline the job, removed/replaced yourself, or did you persist doggedly? I assume wanting or needing the money would be factors? But basically, this contractor here today is trying to fit sqare pegs in round holes...and when it doesnt work he just uses "force"...his work is rough and will have to be redone. **For example, cutting countertops with a dull blade so it came out quite jagged, he says...no one will really see that ,u prbably will put your countertop appliances near here anyway** He also does not have supplies, constantly gone for little things. And has broken stuff. Though he came with recommendations he is not working for me! Shld I give him time to perform better or just axe him after 2 days?
Has anyone built a new home near their existing home acting as their own contractor? I want to build a new home near our current home. We have over five acres in this plot and the county will allow me to do this and retain the current dwelling as a guest house. How did you arrange your financing, if you have done this? I am at a loss here. One previous house I just bought, we are buying this one (but have 75%equity already) and the one I built years ago was done with the contractors building loan on my land. So, I haven't a good idea about the proper way to set this up and proceed.
Looking for an Earth Sheltered Home Contractor? I own my home in Shamokin Dam, PA and I am trying to see if some local building contractor would be willing to show me and help me put up a addition to my home ? Home improvement contractor is charging tax? What types of services or materials can a home improvement contractor charge me sales tax on? For example, if we agree to a price per square foot for wood floors could they charge me sales tax on the total amount or should the tax be included in the per square foot amount?
Very humiliating incident with home contractor? I am getting my kitchen remodeled and he told me he comes at 7:30 but yesterday he came at 7am right after I was getting out of the shower and I was walking to the closet to grab a towel and he and his entire crew ended up seeing me completely naked. It was extremely embarrassing...I apologized and he said oh its really okay but I am still mortified. Is there anything else I should say? He did come onto me he said wow.
"tax home" question for a 1099 contractor? Out of 20 business days a month while working as a 1099 contractor, if I worked more than half of those days at my home or home office, would my "tax home" thus be considered my home office? At what point does the IRS consider your actual home to be your "tax home?" Must you work more than 50% of the time from your home? Thanks!
Mechanic's Lien; If you have a work quality or other disupte with a home improvement contractor he can? file a mechanic's lien against your property, which if not resolved can result in foreclosure of your property. This powerful enforcement device is written into the constitution of most state goverments meaning that attempts to remove language from a home improvements contract about the right to a mechanic's lien would be unconstitutional in that state. I can't think of any other businesses afforded this kind of protection. Yet from a daily scan of news reports no industry seems to be as replete with crooks, hacks, charlatans and scam artists as the home improvements contractors. Do you feel that it is time to remove the mechanic lien's provisions prevalent in most state constitutions?
ever start a home repair job and find out the last contractor? actually was planning ahead knowing more work was to be done and did repairs that made what you needed to do faster, and give better results case in point, doing trim repair for a girl friend and found her brother (a contractor) had re-decked the roof and repaired rafters while everything was exposed giving me good wood to nail my trim into.... this is a first
