How do we go about paying the tax? We were told we needed to file paperwork every 3 months and that we should be holding x amount back, but what paperwork we need to file and how much to hold back is a mystery. Do we have to have an accountant or can we just do this ourselves? ANY information would be helpful. Thanks! We have an accountant now and she is taking care of that aspect AND our household bills-the problem is our morgtage is repetedly late and there have been a few times the utilities have been turned off on us. As an independent contractor, what can I use as a deduction come taxes next year? Could I deduct my car payment? Can I deduct any services to my car, such as oil changes or new tires? I know I can definitely deduct the gas/mileage I use while on the job. Do I need to keep track of how many miles I drive each day for my job? Also, should I keep my receipts for gas? I am 21 years old, unmarried, and without children. I am working as an independent contractor, just started a few days ago. I will make about $12500 for the next 6 months remaining in 2006. What are the legalities of hiring an independent contractor from a different country? I'm thinking in particular a sort of "outsourced office assistant". I've read a couple of blogs from people who've done this, but those who I've emailed have yet to get back to me. So, does anyone know the legalities of doing this? I know sites like Elance do this for an expensive fee, but they cover the legalities by writing the contracts and making sure that this is indeed an independent contractor Not an employee (this is very important to the IRS for taxation reasons). Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
How can I figure taxes for an independent contractor in Texas? This is in Texas so there is no income tax. The independent contracter would earn around $600 every 2 weeks with no taxes taken out. I understand that it is best to file these taxes quarterly, however how would the contractor go about filing them, and how would the contractor know how much they will owe so that they can know how much to set aside each paycheck? The contractor also has another job in which they are considered an employee that pays $225-$250 every 2 weeks, however taxes are taken out of this regularly if this matters at all to the independent contractor job
Can I work as an independent contractor while I wait for temporary disability in California? Around two months ago I was wrongfully discharged for filing a workers comp case. If I work as an independent contractor and earn a little money so that I can eat will I be disqualified for temporary disability? I found a job that I can do that does not violate my restrictions. Problem is I have no idea how much money I would be earning because its on commission. So if I accept the job and earn 10$ one week am I screwed out of temporary disability? I live in California. I heard that I cannot have two sources of income. I know that unemployment encourages you to work and just deducts what you made from your weekly total. Does temporary disability work like this too? Two months with no pay I'm told two weeks after Doctor files paper work I get temporary disability. Where can I get answers? I call workers comp and get a recorded message!! Thank you. Thank you. I did file workers comp and got fired for doing so.

How do I do the taxes on my side of this? Do I write off the checks I send to my employees as expenses?

How are taxes handled differently in a sole proprietorship or just as an independent contractor? I do financial research as an independent contractor for a hedge fund part time. If I make my job a sole proprietorship will I only have to file when I do my personal taxes? What are the differences between the two approaches? Thanks!

Are companies who I am an Independent Contractor for required to send me a 1099 form? I have done work with various companies as an Independent contractor. This work was supplemental to my full time job and only required about 10 hours or less a week. I made about $1800 and received a 1099-misc. Can I make any deductions? Such as half the cost of my phone and internet connection (both required for the work) during this period? From what I've read, I can't deduct any workspace expenses because I use my workspace for so many different things. But what about these extra expenses? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I found out that I have to pay more taxes as an ind. contractor, my employer told me to save half of my check for taxes! i am being paid $18/hr, does this mean that I am really only netting $9/hr after all is said and done? Thanks for your help! After reading these comments and chcking the IRS website, I doubt I am an independent contractor by definition. What is the proper way to report income for a tutoring position as an independent contractor? I have been offered a part-time tutoring position. I would be working as an independent contractor. I'm not sure if this would even be a consistent income but I believe that over time I would be increasing the hours I tutor. I'd like to know what is the proper procedure for reporting small amounts of income like this. Would it fall under self-employment where I'd have to pay estimated quarterly taxes. Is there a minimum you have to expect to earn before this is a requirement? Thanks!

If I was hired as an independent contractor, shouldn't I have had a valid business license? As an independent contractor, if hired by a company, shouldn't there be a contract for the work to be done with both parties signatures and witnessed. If you're using the companies resources ie: vehicles, cell phone and being told to report in every morning, collect paperwork from other IC"s, organize and fax to the owner for billing purposes, does that not make you an employee?
1099-What do I do when I have been wrongly classified as an Independent Contractor? The company I work for hired me as an Independent Contractor. What is the most efficient way to go about being hired legally (or at least, not illegally) as an independent contractor? Any Web site links would be helpful. Please, no HSMP or "opening up my own business" suggestions, as I don't qualify. The less speculative the answer, the more appreciated (in other words, I'd love to hear from those who have personal knowledge or experience with this). Thank you!
Can my S-Corp pay me as an independent contractor rather than an employee? I own an S-Corp and do consulting services through my S-Corp. I am the only person doing any work. Also, I find employment taxes to be a pain in the butt, calculating income and self-employment taxes, making sure I send the payments in on time, yada yada. Would it be ok to just consider myself an independent contractor for my company and 1099 myself at the end of the year? That way the IRS still gets their Social Security tax right, I just don't have to waste time with all the hassles of having an employee... So what I'm saying is, would this raise any red flags, and if I were audited would this be an ok thing that wouldn't get me in trouble?

Is there a maximum amount that you can make as an independent contractor w/o paying taxes? I got paid $200 as an independent contractor. Do I have to report this to the IRS next tax season, or is there a maximum amount that one can make without having to report it?(e.g., $400, $1000, etc). Also...although I got directly paid $200, essentially I made -$90. >:( The expenses incurred from completing the project costed me every penny of the $200 that I got paid. In addition, the consequences that resulted from this project resulted in losing hours at work the next day, which costed me $90 from my paycheck. I know I cannot write off the time off from work on my taxes, but the $200 expenses were a direct consequence of going to work on the project.
Would they be an independent contractor or an employee? Prudence contracted C&N to build her a house, who then assigned the job to to Shacks-4-U. Prudence was not informed of the change, and didn't notice the new names on the bills, continuing to send payments to C&N. When there was a breach of contract, C&N said they have no liability due to the effective assignment to Shacks-4-U. So, is Shacks an employee, or independent contractor? This will help me determine if C&N can still be help liable? Or could it be that C&N simply assigned duties to Shacks?
Can you legally pay a regular employee as an independent contractor? 1099 question? I am a regular employee that pays all of my taxes...ALL of 'em. I have a boss. He finds the jobs. He bids the jobs. He makes the calls on how to build stuff (I am a marine carpenter). He pays me, and has done so steadily for two years. I have to have liability insurance. If I get injured, I think I'm screwed...I have no personal insurance. How good of a deal is he getting by paying me as an independent contractor? And again, is this legal?
